Do I really have a leak, or is it the result of weather conditions, splashing, back-washing?

In the Midwestern part of the U.S., evaporation, impacted by water temperature and wind speed, can account for up to 1/4" a day of water loss from your pool. See below for a simple test that you can do to either confirm or eliminate the possibility of evaporation.

Heavy use with splashing and much entering and exiting of the pool could be another reason for water loss.

Pool cleaning performed by "vacuuming to waste," or excessive "back-washing," will also add up to what would appear to be a leak.

The Bucket Test

One way to rule out evaporation is to perform a "bucket test."

Do the following:
1. Fill the pool to the normal operational level.
2. Dip a bucket of water from your pool.
3. Mark the current water level on the pool wall and on the bucket.
4. Leave the bucket in the pool, having the water level in the bucket the same as the pool. (Place the bucket on a step, for example)
5. 24 hours later, compare the level of water in the bucket to the pool.

If they lost the same amount = No Leak
If the pool lost more than the bucket = Pool Leak
